What To Do If a Tree Falls on Your Roof

Recently a violent storm tore through the Greater Atlanta area leaving downed trees, branches and power lines all over. Having a tree fall on your home can be a very scary and dangerous thing. Here is a quick checklist to go through if this happens to you.

#1 Immediately Evacuate Everyone From The House

Having a predetermined evacuation plan in place can save time and lives. Make sure everyone in your home knows how to exit quickly and safely. Practice your plan with your family before a storm. This can also be very convenient in case of fire as well. Putting together a "Go Bag" or "Bug Out Bag" of emergency supplies, including copies of important documents, cash, car keys and other indispensable items, can ensure that you can get out in quickly in the need of an emergency of any type.

#2 Let The Professionals Handle It

Even if the fallen branch or tree seems small, do not attempt to deal with the issue yourself. You will likely make the situation worse or even get injured in the process. Climbing on a roof may seem easy but even professionals fall and get injured. Roofs are very slippery and step and often times require very special shoes just to even walk on them.

#3 Contact Your Insurance Company

Most home or umbrella insurance policies will cover at least some of the damage caused by storm debris, including the cost of removing the tree that has fallen. Once you report the damage to the insurance company they will advise you on how to proceed. They may recommend or send out an adjuster to inspect the damage. Take photos of the damaged areas if it is safe to do so. Be careful, but try to capture different angles of your home, including close ups and long shots. Have the photos ready to show your insurance company if the need arises.

#4 Call BASH Remodeling

It is a great idea to contact a trustworthy roofing contractor and BASH has 5 start ratings in installation and customer service. Be very wary of storm chasing roof companies who show up ready to help but then scam homeowners and run off with your money.

We hope this never happens to you but if it does you will now be prepared. Whether you go through a storm or not BASH is here for all of your residential remodeling needs.
